The first article of this qualifier asked a simple question: with at least 31 BAL veterans spread across the 2027 Road to BAL rosters, would experience decide the group stage? Three game days and 17 played games later, Groups A and B are complete, and the box scores give a clear first answer. It is not the one the rosters suggested.

The club that swept Group B has one BAL veteran. The most veteran-heavy club in Group A did not win a game on the floor. And the one place where experience and results line up, Group D in Hoima, is still being played.

Three games is a small sample, and every number below should be read that way. But some of what happened between Wednesday and Friday already belongs in the Road to BAL record book.

One result in Group A was never played. Kriol Star reached Tripoli too late for their opener, and the game went into the record as a 20-0 win for Stade Malien. Take it out and Stade Malien finished 0-2 on the floor, Kriol Star 0-2.

Group B: the club with one veteran swept it

Spintex Knights have exactly one player with BAL minutes, Justin Uwitonze, and in the opener he played five minutes. The Ghanaian club still beat Nabaya Sofas 96-90, behind James Amotoe (29 points, 12 assists) and Khyree Temple (27 points, 15 rebounds).

On Thursday the veteran took over. Uwitonze scored 24 points against NPA Pythons in 23 minutes, and every one of them came from behind the arc: 8 of 13 threes, without attempting a single two-pointer. Only three players in Road to BAL history have made more threes in a game. Spintex won 88-66.

On Friday they finished the job, 92-71 over Energie BBC. Temple had 22 points and 14 rebounds, and Benjamin Ashitei scored 22 on 10-of-13 shooting. Across the three wins, BAL veterans scored 14% of Spintex's points. No other unbeaten club comes close to winning with that little experience. Amotoe ran all of it: his 33 assists in three games are 12 more than anyone else in the tournament, and his 12 against Nabaya are tied for the seventh-most in a Road to BAL game.

Nabaya Sofas finished second, with the tournament's top scorer, Allen Fordham (65 points in three games), and its most relentless rebounder. Alseny Bah, a Guinean with three BAL games, pulled down 21 rebounds against Energie BBC on Thursday and 19 more against NPA on Friday. Only two players in Road to BAL history have had more than 21 in a game, and Bah's 50 rebounds in three games are 11 more than anyone else in the field.

Group A: the veterans who won are wearing a new jersey

The most experienced roster in Group A belongs to Stade Malien. Five of their players have played in the BAL, and they scored 69% of the team's points on the floor. Stade Malien still lost both of the games they played: 92-77 to Nadi Basket Staoueli and 74-67 to Al Ittihad, despite 25 points from Kelvin Amayo on Friday.

The club that won the group is Al Ittihad, and its veterans are newcomers too. Mohamed Sadi, a Libyan who has played 23 BAL games for three different clubs, had 39 points, 19 rebounds and 12 assists in the first two games, including 24, 13 and five steals against Kriol Star.

That was the game the first article circled. Ivan Almeida, 37, the man who carried Kriol Star through their BAL season, lined up against his old club in an Al Ittihad jersey. He had 9 points and 7 rebounds and Al Ittihad won 86-66. On Friday, in the last game of the group against Stade Malien, he was Al Ittihad's top scorer: 21 points and 9 rebounds in a 74-67 win. Kriol Star, the club he left, finished without a result on the floor.

Group D: where experience and results agree, so far

Namuwongo Blazers brought eight players with BAL minutes to Hoima, the most in the field, and seven of them have played. They beat Ushindzi de Ouani 109-45 and COSPN 99-56. That is a 107-point differential in two games, and the 64-point win over Ushindzi is the 11th-largest margin in Road to BAL history.

Experience is only half of it. The Blazers' leading scorer is not one of the BAL veterans. It is Franck Nyembo, a 20-year-old from the DR Congo, with 41 points on 17-of-23 shooting and 15 rebounds. The veterans have done their part. Makhtar Gueye has 35 points, Johnathan Jordan, seventh in BAL history in assists, has 14 assists, and Peter Olisemeka, the third-best rebounder in BAL history, had 15 rebounds in 22 minutes against Ushindzi.

The club level with them is Urunani BBC of Burundi, 3-0 after a 117-58 win over Ushindzi on Friday. Those 117 points are the tenth-most in Road to BAL history, and the 59-point margin is the 12th-largest. Cheikh Diallo scored 27 in 20 minutes.

Urunani also beat the veterans' favourite. Patriot BC, with the 2022 MVP Michael Dixon and the BAL's all-time rebounding and blocks leader Ater Majok, lost their opener 84-79, against three Urunani 20-point scorers: Diallo with 24, and Mahamane Coulibaly and Jeffery Stubbs with 21 each. Coulibaly, a 25-year-old from Mali with six BAL games, has 55 points on 21-of-36 shooting in three wins.

Patriot recovered on Friday, 89-79 over COSPN. The points came from players without BAL minutes, Jackson Makoi (23) and Gob Makuac Gob (16 and eight assists), with Dixon adding 16 and Majok 10. Patriot play Namuwongo on Saturday.

What it adds up to

Experience did not decide Groups A or B on its own. Every unbeaten club has at least one BAL veteran, but Spintex Knights swept Group B with almost none, and Stade Malien lost both games they played with plenty. The clearest pattern is a different one. The veterans who mattered most are the ones who changed clubs: Sadi and Almeida at Al Ittihad, and the City Oilers alumni at Namuwongo.

Group D is the exception still being written. Namuwongo, the most experienced roster in the field, meet Patriot BC, the most decorated, on Saturday, and Group C opens the same day. Every result and box score is on The BAL Report's Road to BAL pages.
